On Saturday, January 26, 2019, my husband and I joined a long line of people waiting to gain entry into the Opening Gala for the School of Visual Philosophy. Passersby expressed surprise at the size of the crowd, with speculation overheard as people wondered what band might be playing there (no band, but there was a DJ). The people manning the door urged patience as the fire code limited the number of people allowed into the facility. Progress was made as the line inched forward. As attendees left the building, more were allowed to enter. At one point, the founders, Yori and Dana Seeger, made their way through the entire lineup, shaking hands, apologizing for the wait, and sparking interesting conversations.
At last, we were through the doors. A mass of energy greeted us, as people milled about excitedly chatting about the amazing space. The ceilings are high with numerous skylights, giving a feeling of spaciousness. The room we entered was large, but well partitioned into useful spaces for meetings, classes, artists’ studios, and more. The ambiance was what I would call rustic-industrial and very appealing. I learned that the former occupant of the building was a batting cage business, and that explains the spaciousness and high ceilings.
We joined the crowd in exploring, talking to artists, to Yori and Dana, and to other attendees. Everyone was charged with excitement for the possibilities. It was overwhelming, but in a good way. The energy was through the roof with speculation and admiration for the space. My husband and I were entranced. Overall, the opening was a huge success.
