Varnishing is finished on ten (10!) new original acrylic paintings. I’ll show them for the first time this coming weekend at the Autumn Art Fair being held at the School of Visual Philosophy.

Let's Skip Winter acrylic painting of poppies by Julie Bovee

I have one large, colorful poppy painting titled “Let’s Skip Winter.” My mom was at the forefront of my mind while I layered the bright colors on it. She lives in Michigan and has been enjoying an early cold snap with plenty of snow. I remember Michigan winters so well, and my moving to California in 2000 tells you what that title is all about.

I also have an 8″ x 8″ sunflower close-up titled “Do Sunflowers Smile?” (you know I love sunflowers!), seven mini 5″ x 7″ field of flowers paintings (as of this writing two have sold already), and the last one is a 5″ x 7″ mini citrus and bee painting (it’s tentatively reserved).

Event Details:

What: Autumn Air Fair
When: Saturday, November 16, 2019; 1-6:00 pm
Where: School of Visual Philosophy, 1065 The Alameda, San Jose, California 95126
My Painting Demo: 2-3:00 pm

In addition to the artists with studios at the School holding open studios (it’s so much fun to see everyone’s art!). We’ll also have a shared Art Fair Bazaar area in the print shop with art from a variety of artists available for sale. I’ll be selling original paintings, high quality prints, mugs, and some fun tags and bookmarks that I’ve made just for this event. Finally, there will be lots of fun activities for all ages (bring your kids!), cornhole, a yummy bakesale, food and beverages.

Many of the resident artists will be giving demos in the main classroom area, myself included. I have a one hour demo; obviously not enough time to complete a painting. Instead, I plan to have several paintings in various stages and paint on one that’s ready to start adding sky, greenery and flowers. I’ll get as much done as I can in my one-hour slot and depending on how busy my studio is, I might continue painting in there afterward. The demo will be just outside my studio in the main classroom area.

Here’s the full list of demos we have scheduled:

  • 1:00-6:00 pm: patterning/sewing by Jaya
  • 1:30-2:30 pm: lettering by Tim
  • 2:00-3:00 pm: painting by Julie
  • 2:30-3:30 pm: drawing by Jemal
  • 3:00-4:00 pm: wax sculpting by Doug and Nico
  • 3:30-4:30pm: relief painting by Carol
  • 4:30-5:30pm: sewing by Guilianna
  • 4:15-5:15 pm: blacksmithing by Yori

Painting inspired by Mural at Leif Erikson Park

I recently had the opportunity to think about what community spirit means to me and realized my experience painting a mural at a local park was the perfect example. I’ve submitted this new painting to the City of San José’s Office of Cultural Affairs’ Public Art Program as an example of community spirit and resilience.

Fresh Art Hung in San Jose

I updated the paintings I have hanging at KALEID Gallery in San Jose, California today. This was the fastest update I’ve ever done thanks to amazing help from Fernando. I’d run out of quarters for the parking meter out front, and was putting in every last dime I could dig out of my car, which gave me about 3-4 minutes per each. Pitiful hahaha. Fernando was so much help! Together, we did the whole hanging in less than an hour and I didn’t get a parking ticket. Woot!
