Julie Bovee with Let's Skip Winter acrylic painting

Julie Bovee with her painting titled Let’s Skip Winter, the painting that’s the inspiration for her new solo art exhibition

The first Friday of December, I’ll be opening a solo exhibition of my art in downtown San Jose. This is as much of a surprise to me as it is to you! The universal energies lined up just right so that I’ll be able to celebrate and share my art throughout the holiday season.

The title of my exhibition is “Let’s Skip Winter” and it opens during the South First Fridays Art Walk in San Jose on December 6th, from 7-10:00 pm. The exhibition lasts two months and ends at the end of January 2020.

Exhibition Description

Our ecosystem and aquifers in the Bay Area depend upon winter to replenish and recharge. While nature is rejuvenated by the cool, wet weather, we humans can experience seasonal affective disorder during the many dreary days.

“Let’s Skip Winter” doesn’t imply a desire to skip this integral part of the seasonal cycle. Instead, it considers the effect a shift of perspective might bring – a shift to feeling the brightness of spring even when the days are dark, damp and cold.

The title painting of this exhibition was conceived of and painted earlier this fall during a period when my mother sent me photos showing an early snowfall that had blanketed Michigan. Initially, the fresh, untouched snow is beautiful to behold, but I know all too well how cold and depressing it can become as the winter days wear on. “Let’s Skip Winter” encourages viewers to hold onto the feeling of spring approaching, even while winter is raging around them.

Painting inspired by Mural at Leif Erikson Park

I recently had the opportunity to think about what community spirit means to me and realized my experience painting a mural at a local park was the perfect example. I’ve submitted this new painting to the City of San José’s Office of Cultural Affairs’ Public Art Program as an example of community spirit and resilience.

Fresh Art Hung in San Jose

I updated the paintings I have hanging at KALEID Gallery in San Jose, California today. This was the fastest update I’ve ever done thanks to amazing help from Fernando. I’d run out of quarters for the parking meter out front, and was putting in every last dime I could dig out of my car, which gave me about 3-4 minutes per each. Pitiful hahaha. Fernando was so much help! Together, we did the whole hanging in less than an hour and I didn’t get a parking ticket. Woot!
